It is a loud, distinctive, old-fashioned machine that never fails to get a Kapiti couple attention wherever they go, and yesterday Nelson's Trafalgar St proved no exception.
Motorcycle mechanic Michael Dobson and partner Sheryl Manson were in town on their way to Golden Bay yesterday, making the journey to an Old Thumpers motorcycle meeting on their genuine 1971 Russian Ural.
Mr Dobson said he had owned the machine since 1974, and it never failed to turn heads and spark conversations.
"It's the whole fun factor," he said.
The engine was a refreshing change from the type of motorcycle he was used to working with, he said.
"I'm working with modern, fuel-injected engines. This is just so simple."
He had made several modifications to the engine, but it still worked fine.
"It's perfect for the back roads."
