Motorbike used as tribute to son

TRIBUTE: Graeme Billington's motorbike draws attention to his son, who committed suicide, and encourages people to seek help. The father of a Palmerston North man who took his own life is using his motorbike to encourage people to spot the warning signs of depression.

Last July, Paul Billington, who had been diagnosed with depression, committed suicide aged 27.

He left behind a 2-year-old son.

Two teenage Napier brothers have been sent to jail for their roles in stealing a $37,000 Harley Davidson motorbike in an escapade a judge labelled "bare-faced banditry".

Judas James Rarere, 18, was last week sentenced to two years and nine months for charges of taking the bike and burglary involving the theft of a trailer to carry the machine. He had denied the charges in a hearing before Judge Tony Adeane in Napier District Court in December.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years for dangerous driving after the Sunday afternoon theft of the motorbike from a busy Noel Leeming carpark off Hastings St, Napier, on August 28 last year.

Motorcycle mechanic Michael Dobson and partner Sheryl Manson were in town on their way to Golden Bay yesterday, making the journey to an Old Thumpers motorcycle meeting on their genuine 1971 Russian Ural.

Mr Dobson said he had owned the machine since 1974, and it never failed to turn heads and spark conversations.
