Farewell for biker businessman

Prominent Taupo businessman Peter Paul, who died in a motorcycle crash in the Coromandel, will be farewelled at a Great Lake Centre funeral service in Taupo tomorrow.

Mr Paul was on a ride to Coromandel with some of his motorcyclist friends when he was killed about 6pm on Friday after his bike left the road.

His body, accompanied by an entourage of vehicles, was taken to Ngongotaha in the Bay of Plenty yesterday to enable family there to pay their last respects. He will be buried in Taupo.

With a high number of people being injured on quad bikes during the summer holiday period, ACC and the Department of Labour are reminding riders of the dangers of not adhering to safety rules.

850 people are injured on quad bikes on farms each year. Five die. The total cost to ACC for quad bike related claims in the 2010/2011 financial year, including ongoing claims lodged in previous years, was approximately $8.6 million.

Most recently Christmas was ruined for a number of families where people were injured in quad bike accidents on farms and beaches across the country, which included the death of a child.

A Hamilton man is furious that his prized vintage motorbike collection, including an 86-year-old Harley Davidson, was stolen by brazen thieves who wheeled them past his window as he slept.

But Ron Carpenter, 77, hopes a $1000 reward for information will bring his bikes back home.

"There had to be a group of them involved to get those bikes out and off the property without being seen, and that means that quite a few people know what happened and where they are now," Mr Carpenter said.
